Supporters of CTC,
It is a pleasure to send you a quick mid month update on the goings on of CTC.
Chicago Sprints Regatta
Earlier this month the Summer Camp concluded with the Chicago Sprints Regatta in Lincoln Park. The weather for the event was fantastic, which was a nice surprise as the weather the weeks leading up to the event was a little foreboding! For this year's regatta we entered more kids than ever before and many kids had the opportunity to race three times! We also had more parents than ever show up to cheer their kids on as well as man the grill for the requisite riverside BBQing!
Our top result came from our girls' quad that won gold. And though this gold was earned in a competitive situation where only CTC was entered, their approach and execution of a race plan was evident and to be applauded. Included in that top quad was 8th grader Evelyn Duran - younger sister to Abel Duran who happened to be the first ever CTC rower and part of the first graduating class of CTC. Starting your rowing career with a gold medal is never a bad thing!
Our second best result was in the boys' quad where we again won silver (to add to last year's result) but were more competitive and more polished than the year prior. The funny thing in this race is that CTC lost to a St. Ignatius team whose rowers learned how to scull at our camp in 2009! It was a little humble pie for our rowers to swallow but definitely a good learning experience to grow from. The ending verdict was 2 seconds and the race went back and forth the entire length of the course.
The remaining races were all enjoyable and fun for the kids and overall we entered eleven boats in six events for the two-day regatta.
Chicago Works TV
CTC was also the lucky recipient of interest from the City of Chicago's cable access show Chicago Works. Our kids, who were interviewed during our down time prior to camp, got the rock star treatment from the interviewer and then became the focus for a piece of over nine min in length! You can access this piece by clicking here.
Post Summer Camp Rowing
CTC is now playing out the lazy summer by still offering the kids 4 days of rowing per week and the weekly BBQ every Sunday afternoon. The record of hotdogs per person per sitting currently stands at nine and we have at least five more weekends to topple that record!
Work has begun in earnest for the upcoming fall season to get more kids to come out and join the squad.
We will be again on the water in competition for the 2010 Head of the Rock and also be looking to send our high competitions out to Philadelphia for Head of the Schuylkill.
We are always on the look out for help and support so if you know of anyone that would like to get involved (this also includes you!) please do not hesitate to contact us. You can find us online, by email, on Facebook or by phone at 1.302.338.1205.
