Benefits
The result of mental focus in harmony with physical energy is demonstrated at indoor events, outdoor races (regattas), and in everyday life. Experiencing success as a contributing member of a team builds a positive perspective and confidence.
Without teamwork you cannot succeed.
The collective team is always greater than the sum of its parts.
These relationships stay with you for your lifetime.
Rowing is unusual in the demands it places on competitors. The standard race distance of 2,000 m is long enough to have a large endurance element, but short enough (typically 5.5 to 7.5 minutes) to feel like a sprint.
Rowers have some of the highest power outputs of athletes in any sport. At the same time the motion involved in the sport compresses the rowers' lungs, limiting the amount of oxygen available to them. This requires rowers to tailor their breathing to the stroke, typically inhaling and exhaling twice per stroke, unlike most other sports such as cycling where competitors can breathe freely.
From the program start, when we visit regional regattas and college campuses to indoor competitions, away training and regional, national and international competition, the sport of rowing offers travel opportunities at every level.
Every athlete can benefit from the discipline, cooperation and commitment that participation in rowing requires. There is something about the sport and the necessity to plan the day’s work and the commitment to the other members of the team that helps students to succeed in school. It is also a trait of the people who are rowers that we become involved in work or volunteer activities to support the communities in which we live.
Rowing is unique as a sport in that worldwide 74% of the athletes acquire a university degree and 64% have a post graduate degree. The sport provides academic and scholarship opportunities and develops the skills required to succeed academically and to apply the talents learned in college effectively.
