About
Chicago Training Center expanded its programming in 2019 to include maintenance of boats, oars, and rowing machines giving members a clearer understanding of how tools work and ownership over their condition. CTC strives to create skill building opportunities for its members. Many of CTC’s boats are used and severely damaged when we receive them, and even more get damaged during their life on our team. Creating a boat repair program for high school team members allowed CTC to both lower the cost of repairing the boats in our fleet and teach repair skills to CTC members.
History
Boat Repair began in the winter of 2013/14 in the second floor space of Chicago Yacht Works, where our shell trailer was craned up and stored for winter storage. BR initially met on Saturdays from 9:00am - 1:00pm as a volunteering opportunity for high school students. It began as part of the winter season where volunteers would meet at the Chicago Yacht Works to make repairs. Students, alumni, and youth from the One Summer Chicago program have since had the opportunity of doing repairs on many of our boats. Members of CTC have fixed countless boats with repairs on fins, splash guards, deteriorating ribs, damages to the hull, keels, gunwales, and even changes/repairs on old riggers to be reused.
